SWremote over internet connection

Hi All,
I'm trying to access a SWremote on my HB server at home from work using a SWremote client on my office computer. I have a dyndns address (http://www.xxxx.dyndns.org). I opened port 5015 (is that the right port?) on my router, the dyndns client is running, etc. I set the Server Address in the SWremote clinet configuration screen to http://www.xxxx.dyndns.org:5015.
When I run the client I get an error saying "Cannot reslove servere address...." I read some other posts regarding this and I think I have everything set up correctly. Anything anyone can think of that I might try is appreciated.

I forgot to say that I telneted xxxx.dyndns.org 5015 and that works. Also I accidentaly typed a : between the dns address and the port in my email but I have it correct (no colon) in the SWremote client configuration.

I've never actually tested the SWRemote using dyndns. However, the port suffix will defiantly not work. Since the default port is 5015, you can just remove the ":5015" part of the server address.
Also, try specifying just "xxxx.dyndns.org", instead of
http://xxxx.dyndns.org.

xxxx.dyndns.org worked like a charm. Thanks for the help and quick reply! I documented this in this TIPS forum last night.
Now if I could only get this to work on my WM6 based SmartPhone (an HTC Apache) over my Verizon wireless data connection. I still get "unable to resolve server address" errors. I am also able to telnet in using PockeTTY but the SWRemote client still give me the error.
Any ideas there?

if it says that it can't resolve the server address, then it must be a problem with DNS. If you can specify a DNS, you might try a different one. If you are forced through Verizons, then maybe they are blocking sites like dyndns.
If you ping xxxx.dyndns.org and get the IP address, try using that as the server address and see if it connects.

I tried that too (using the IP address xx._._._) and instead of "Cannot Resolve Server Addresss..." I get
"Client is attempting to connect to the server connect() failed:" Some progress I guess.

If you are seeing the connection error, then you have made one step of progress. The issue may be that Verizon blocks most ports. You might try and use a more common port and see if that works. You can even set it to port 80 (as long as your HB server isn't running a web server too).
Checkout the online help for info on how to change the port on the server and remotes.

I changed the server port as described in the help. No good. I am still getting the connection error. I tried 23, 80, 8000 and 10000. Must be Verizon is blocking incoming ports. Is that likely? Any other specific ports I should try?

They can't block all the ports. If you can pull up a web page on your phone, then they must be allowing port 80. I suppose maybe they could block all non-http protocols... but I really doubt that. I guess you probably don't have telnet on the SmartPhone, but it would be interesting to know if you can telnet into the server on port 80.
Did you change the port configuration on both the server and remote?

I have no problem using SWremote over verizon with my samsung i760 which is a WM6 smartphone. I don't do anything special it resolves my hostname fine. I'm using the default port. Must be something else not setup right. Is your router port forwarded properly. What size background did you use in your theme? Can you access it from a remote PC?
I did find that the software remote would not activate the data connection on my phone automatically. As long as I get the data connection started using Pocket Explorer or something else it connects fine. If I don't active the data connection first I get the "can't resolve address".

Hi Mark,
Thanks for the reply. I am able to access the SWRemote from my desktop PC and laptop at work so the port must be forwarding OK. I can also telnet from my phone into port 5015. Sounds like it might be that my data connection is not active. How do you get it active?

On my phone it gets activated when I access the web with the phone browser or some other Internet program like telnet is used. Then it stays connected unless I disconnect it. On my phone the icon near the top of the display showing the signal bar strength changes from an antenna with the signal bars to two arrows pointing at each other with the signal bars when the data connection is active.
If you can telnet in, try opening the connection with telnet then leave telnet running to keep the data connection active and try the software remote.
Make sure on the phone software remote configuration the "Server Address" is just xxxx.dyndns.org or the current IP address. The "Software Remote Name" needs to match the name you gave it in HouseBot.
I just use the default port 5015. Make sure the port is forwarded in your router which it is if you can connect from a remote PC.

Well, here is more grist for the mill...I connected my phone to my laptop to use it to access the internet wirelessly and guess what...the SWRemote on my laptop works using the phone to get to the internet. So, the problem has something to do with the client running on my phone it seems. Just to recap, its a WM6 device, I can telnet into port 5105 but I get errors trying to connect to my HBServer. I even deleted the Cebotics registry entries on the phone and started over but no luck. Strange.
