Elan Z series control

Elan's Z series uses IR commands sent over wire (or using optional IR sensor w or without keypad). Has anyone played with these and made any progress? I'm considering a GC 100-12 and will use 3 of the IR ports for controlling the whole house audio system. Elan is very un-helpful, gladly referring you to a dealer, surprising the same dealer that refused to help my customer debug their system they bought from them...(that's how I ended up with it.)
